Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa has apologised for his comments at the 2011 Comic-con, where he made a joke about raping women, Entertainment Weekly reported. In a recently unearthed video, Momoa can be heard saying that he loved sci-fi and fantasy genres because “there are so many things you can do, like rip someone’s tongue out of their throat and get away with it and rape beautiful women”.
In a post on Instagram, Momoa said that he was disappointed in himself at the insensitivity of his remarks. “I know my sincerest apology now won’t take away those hurtful words,” he wrote. “Rape and sexual harassment can reach anyone and I have seen firsthand its painful torment among members of my own family and friends. I made a truly tasteless comment. It is unacceptable and I sincerely apologise with a heavy heart for the words I said.”
Momoa will feature as Aquaman in Warner Bros.’ upcoming superhero film Justice League with Ben Affleck, who plays Batman. Momoa’s post on Instagram comes in the wake of a similar incident involving Affleck, who publicly apologised for groping host Hilarie Burton on the MTV show Total Request Live in 2003.
Both instances have followed a wave of sexual assault allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein, who is now being investigated.
