Renowned actor Sharmila Tagore will be honoured at the opening ceremony of the Mumbai Film Festival (October 12-18) on Thursday for her contributions to Indian cinema.

Tagore has starred in more than a hundred films in the Hindi and Bengali languages and has received two National Film Awards, for Mausam (1975) and Abar Aranye (2003). She made her big screen debut in Satyajit Ray’s Apur Sansar (1959) and appeared in several of Ray’s subsequent productions. Tagore also starred in commercial hits in Hindi, including An Evening in Paris (1967), Aradhana (1969) and Amar Prem (1972).

The actor also served as chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification between 2004 and 2011.
