The Madras High Court dismissed on Friday a petition demanding that Thenandal Studios be restrained from using the title Mersal for its upcoming action film. Mersal stars Tamil star Vijay in a triple role.

A Rajendran of production house Film Factori had secured an interim injunction on the release, claiming that that he had registered a similar title, Merrasalaitan, as well as Naan Merrasalaitan, with the Tamil Film Producers Council in 2015.

Mersal is now scheduled to be released this Diwali. However, it is unclear how the producers will manage to release the film on time in light of the ongoing film producer’s strike against the entertainment tax that is levied over and above the Goods and Services Tax by the Chennai Corporation.

Directed by Atlee, Mersal also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and SJ Surya, and has been scored by AR Rahman. Originally scheduled to release on October 18, the film is now likely to clash with Sasikumar’s Kodiveeran.
