“She was one of the naughtiest parents. But she understood that there was a real life outside palace walls.”

Nearly 20 years since Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a horrific car accident in Paris, her sons William and Harry will share their memories of her in an upcoming HBO documentary. Diana Our Mother and Her Legacy will draw on intimate conversations with William and Harry (15 and 12 respectively at the time of her death on August 31, 1997) and include glimpses of a private family album assembled by Diana.

According to the TV network, the documentary “includes individual contributions from many key figures in the Princess’ life and new archival material”. Ashley Gething, who has previously made TV films on Queen Elizabeth, Richard the III and Barack Obama, had directed the documentary. The film will be broadcast sometime in July.

Diana’s death, at the age of 36, shocked the world, with Great Britain, in particular, witnessing an unprecedented outpouring of grief. Diana Our Mother and Her Legacy won’t be the first or the last word on the subject. The American network ABC has teamed up with People magazine for a four-hour documentary on Diana. “Princess Diana graced the cover of People magazine some 57 times — more than any other person in the history of the magazine,” a report in Variety said.

Another television special will examine the theories surrounding the deaths of Diana, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed, and the driver of the car, Henri Paul. Princess Diana: Tragedy or Treason will be aired on the American channel TLC on July 31. The TV documentary will include “never-before-seen-footage and interviews with people like Diana’s bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, Mary Robertson, James Colthurst, Kate Williams, and Ingrid Seward, as well as journalists like Deborah Norville and Tamron Hall”, said a report. “Conspiracy theory expert, Richard Selzer, from Law and Order: SVU fame will also discuss Diana in detail.”
