The Bengali family drama Posto, directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy, was released on May 12. Any guesses about its box office fate?
Posto, by the filmmaking pair behind the hits Accident, Ramdhanu, Belaseshe and Praktan, has raked in a reported Rs one crore over four days in Bengal, according to distributor Eros International. Co-produced by Eros International and Windows, Posto stars Bengali acting legend Soumitra Chatterjee as a grandfather who battles his daughter and in son-in-law in court over the custody of his grandchild, whose nickname has inspired the film’s title. Dinen Lahiri (Chatterjee) takes care of Posto (Argha Basu Roy) while his son Arnab (Jisshu Sengupta) and daughter-in-law Sushmita (Mimi Chakraborty) pursue their own lives. Dinen puts his foot down when the couple announce their decision to relocate with their son to the United Kingdom. The matter ends up in a courtroom.
With Posto’s success, Mukherjee and Roy have proven yet again that they understand the tastes and morality of middle-class Bengali audiences and have the ability to unerringly reflect their hopes and anxieties like few other contemporary directors. Posto was released on 75 screens in Bengal. It will be released on May 19 in the rest of India and overseas territories with English subtitles on an estimated 100 screens.
