La La Land Damien Chazelle’s contemporary version of the classic musical washes into India on the back of raves at the Venice Film Festival, where it was premiered, and giddy reviews in America, where it was released on December 9. The Emma Stone-Ryan Gosling starrer was released on December 9 in India too, but only on the IMAX format. The title is a play on Los Angeles, where the film is set, and where jazz pianist Sebastian (Gosling) and aspiring actor Mia (Stone) meet and fall madly in love. Stone and Gosling have sung their own songs, while the music is by Justin Hurwitz.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) directs the spinoff from the Star Wars franchise, about a rebel group that asks Jyn (Felicity Jones) to steal the design of the Empire’s superweapon. The cast includes Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, Forest Whitaker and Riz Ahmed. This movie, like the ones that are expected to follow, will not intersect with the main Star Wars franchise.
